Disabled man dies in Kelantan police station lock-up

KOTA BHARU:
Kelantan police have confirmed that a man with disabilities died in the Pengkalan Chepa police station lock-up at 7.40am yesterday.

Kelantan police chief Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the man was confirmed dead by a medical assistant from the Pengkalan Chepa health clinic.

“The man was arrested at 12.30pm, Dec 26, and investigated under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“At 9.14am, Dec 27, he was taken to the Kota Bharu court for a remand application and remanded for four days from Dec 27 until today,” he said in a statement yesterday.

At 7am, the police personnel on duty at the Pengkalan Chepa police station lock-up found the man unconscious. He was confirmed dead at 7.40am, Yusoff said.

The case has been classified as sudden death. It is being investigated by the criminal investigation unit on deaths in custody of Bukit Aman’s integrity and standard compliance department.

“Further investigations will continue until we receive the post-mortem report. The public is advised not to speculate on this case while investigations are ongoing,” Yusoff said.
