PETALING JAYA:
A pisang goreng seller who set a motorcycle on fire to prevent it from being repossessed in Taiping recently has pleaded guilty to committing mischief by fire.

Zainatul Rafeda Zainul Abidin, 43, made the plea after being charged before judge Nabisha Ibrahim at the Taiping sessions court today, Berita Harian reported.

Nabisha fixed Jan 14 for sentencing.

Zainatul was charged with committing mischief by fire by setting the motorcycle alight at Jalan Masjid in Pokok Assam, Taiping, at 3.50pm on Dec 26.

According to the charge sheet, the motorcycle belonged to 22-year-old Zainatul Syakira Amira Zaini.

She was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of 14 years’ imprisonment and a fine, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Fahmi Kamaluddin proposed bail at RM20,000 with one surety but lawyer Ng Wei Jun requested a lower sum.

Ng said Zainatul only earned RM1,000 a month and had to support her four children and her stroke-ridden husband.

The judge granted bail at RM4,000 with one surety.

A viral video showed Zainatul dousing the motorcycle with petrol and then setting it on fire to prevent a group of men, believed to be repossessors, from seizing the vehicle.

It was reported that she had 20 months’ unpaid instalments for the motorcycle.
