DAP trio hit out at PAS for politicising ministry’s Christmas do

They say the criticism by a PAS Youth leader contradicted the statement by the Islamic party’s secretary-general.

PETALING JAYA:
Three DAP leaders have hit out at their PAS counterparts for politicising a Christmas celebration organised by the housing and local government ministry, saying such action contradicted the statement by the Islamic party’s secretary-general.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan had in his Christmas message on Dec 24 said Christian holidays were a vital part of Malaysia’s cultural tapestry.

He also said that Christmas celebrations not only added vibrancy to Malaysia’s shared experiences but also foster a deeper sense of respect, understanding and unity, adding that the party “embraced and celebrated the enriching aspects of these celebrations”.

However, yesterday it was reported that PAS Youth vice-chief Hanif Jamaluddin had taken issue with a Christmas celebration organised by the housing and local government ministry as it involved Muslim staff.

Hanif said the minister, Nga Kor Ming, should understand that Muslims were prohibited from getting directly involved in celebrations of faiths that went against Islamic teachings.

In a joint statement, Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, Young Syefura Othman and Syahredzan Johan said the differing stance taken by PAS leaders proved that despite attempts to portray the party was inclusive, PAS leaders had no respect for the rights of Malaysia’s multicultural citizens.

“And this diversity should be celebrated, understood and respected instead of manipulated to score political points.”

The trio, who are DAP central executive committee members, said PAS should be upholding the rights and protecting the interests of all races as stipulated in the Federal Constitution.

They said PAS should not be creating divisions by being narrow minded.

“We urge PAS to abandon its political extremism by refusing to celebrate the country’s diversity.”

Last night, FMT reported that a source within the ministry had said they did not force any of its personnel to attend the Christmas function.

The source also said that the Christmas carollers who performed at the event were East Malaysian Christians.

Separately, at a press conference in Perak, Nga said the Christmas celebration held at the ministry is to celebrate Malaysia’s cultural diversity and foster a spirit of goodwill among various communities.

He added that his ministry has celebrated various religious festivals since he took the helm as the minister, including Hari Raya Aldifiltri, Deepavali and Chinese New Year.
