According to reports circulating on social media, the incident allegedly occurred on Dec 22 when an estate worker reportedly shot a dog with an arrow for entering the wrong lane, leading to the animal’s death.
Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) condemned the act and encouraged witnesses to file official reports at the nearest police station and lodge complaints with the veterinary services department (DVS).
“SAFM urges any witnesses to the incident to come forward, provide statements and assist with the investigation,” it said in a Facebook post today.
“Witness testimonies are crucial evidence in ensuring appropriate action is taken against those responsible.”
The NGO said that such actions, if proven true, warrant a thorough investigation by the police and the DVS, as it violates Section 30 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.
The law stipulates penalties of up to three years in jail, a fine of RM100,000 or both for causing the death of an animal without a valid reason.
It also called for a strengthening of existing laws and a more stringent and effective enforcement system, given how acts of animal cruelty seem to continue occurring.
“SAFM urges the community to unite in upholding animal rights and ensuring decisive action is taken against the perpetrators.”
