MELAKA:
A lorry driver pleaded not guilty at the Ayer Keroh magistrates’ court here today to charges of dangerous driving and causing the death of two teenage boys last year.

S Vinudharan, 26, was charged with dangerous driving resulting in an accident and the deaths of Erwan Idris and Putra Norsyaqir Putrawirawan, both aged 16, at Jalan Krubong Permai, Melaka Tengah, at 9.53pm on Dec 24, 2023.

The charges were framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for between five and 10 years’ jail and a RM20,000 to RM50,000 fine, upon conviction.

If convicted, he will also be barred from holding a driver’s licence for at least five years.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Hanis Aliah Ahmad Kamarulnajib proposed bail of RM16,000 but lawyer MX Koh appealed for a lower amount, saying his client had dependents and only earned RM160 per day.

Magistrate Nor Syaliati Sobri set bail at RM6,500 with one surety and fixed Jan 27 for mention.
