Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the postponement after considering the feedback from various MPs during the two-day debate.
He said the bill would be referred to two parliamentary special select committees, namely the committees handling transportation, infrastructure and communications, as well as human rights, elections and institutional reforms.
“You have asked, and I have delivered,” he told the Dewan Rakyat after proposing the postponement under Standing Order 62.
The decision follows calls from MPs – including R Yuneswaran (PH-Segamat), Lee Chean Chung (PH-Petaling Jaya), and Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) – to refer the amendments to a select committee.
The bill, which had its first reading in the Dewan Rakyat last Monday, proposes changes aimed at enhancing the governance and operations of MCMC, the country’s internet regulator.
Among the key amendments are the separation of the roles of the MCMC chairman and CEO, as well as the expansion of the commission’s functions.
Fahmi said: “I hope more people will provide their views through these committees so that we can all consider them and present a proposal that we hope will be agreed upon and supported by all parties.
“I, therefore, have no objection if the special committees invite and involve other parties in this discussion.”
