Zii Jia’s camp, Team LZJ, said it accepted Wong’s decision to move on and expressed gratitude for his hard work, dedication, and guidance throughout his tenure.
It said Wong had played a key role in helping the Kedahan shuttler return to the world’s top 10, win titles, and secure the bronze medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Coach Tat Meng will continue to serve with Team LZJ until his contract formally ends on Dec 31, 2024, and is now preparing Zii Jia for the upcoming BWF World Tour Finals,” it said in a posting on X.
Team LZJ said a successor to Wong would be appointed in due course as preparations are made for the 2025 season and the next Olympic cycle.
Wong became Zii Jia’s coach in May 2023, replacing Indonesian coach Indra Wijaya who left due to the 26-year-old’s desire to explore new coaching approaches.
Wong previously coached the Hong Kong and South Korean national badminton teams.
He also had two stints with the Badminton Association of Malaysia, where he served as coach for both the men’s and women’s singles teams from 2003 to 2011 and from 2013 to 2016.
