PETALING JAYA:
Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has dismissed claims that data from the MyKad of 17 million Malaysians had been leaked and was being sold on the dark web.

Saifuddin said he immediately checked on the claim with the national registration department and National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa) when he found the allegations circulating on social media.

“They confirmed to me that no such incident took place,” he said in a TikTok video.

Earlier, Nacsa said it had launched a probe to verify the claims and assess the extent of the alleged data leak.

It also urged the public to monitor their bank accounts and credit reports for suspicious transactions, and to be wary of unsolicited communications, particularly if they receive links or attachments from unknown numbers.

The issue was flagged on social media yesterday, with the alleged perpetrators sharing pictures of MyKad on the dark web to prove their claims.
