PETALING JAYA:
The education ministry’s intervention programme has helped 48,308 Year 1 pupils master reading, writing and arithmetic (3R) skills, says its minister, Fadhlina Sidek.

This is 39.58% of the 122,062 Year 1 pupils who were previously identified as needing intervention in the basic 3R skills

In a written parliamentary reply, Fadhlina said the 48,308 Year 1 pupils who successfully mastered the skills have since been allowed to go back to regular classes.

“For the remaining 73,754 students who have yet to master the 3R skills, they will continue to Phase 2 of the intervention programme for three months, from October to December.

“Those who have yet to master the skills after Phase 2 will be nominated for a special remedial programme in Year 2. This programme will provide intensive guidance to ensure they are given the necessary attention to reach the expected literacy and numeracy level,” she said.

She was replying to a question from Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) about the efficacy of the ministry’s intervention programme for Year 1 pupils who have yet to master the 3R skills.
