TUMPAT:
Police have confirmed that two elderly men drowned while tending to their livestock in two villages in Machang today, bringing flood-related fatalities in Kelantan to five.

Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said that the two men had refused to evacuate to a relief centre despite their homes being flooded.

The two victims, aged 72 and 78, were found drowned in Kampung Kuala Sat and Kampung Gelung Gajah, he said.

He urged those affected by the floods to comply with the authorities’ instructions to relocate to relief centres.

Yusoff said the two victims had wanted to tend to their livestock, such as cows and goats.

“Some even built well-crafted rafts to secure their livestock and prevent them from being swept away by strong flood currents,” he said.

Cars believed swept away

The Tumpat-Pengkalan road remained flooded and impassable near Taman Sri Bayu here, Yusoff said. “I’ve received reports that several cars were swept away in the incident, but no one has filed police reports,” he said.

The road was originally an elevated route used by villagers to park their vehicles during the floods. It gave way during heavy flooding.

“When the floods hit, car owners left their vehicles there when they were evacuated. The strong currents eventually caused the road to collapse,” he said.

Yusoff said the area is unsafe and could collapse further at any time.

Boats used to send students home and to school

A total of 95 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Keroh in Kuala Kai were ferried by boats belonging to the civil defence force and police to cross the Kuala Nal River today.

Kuala Krai civil defence officer Abd Fatah Abd Aziz said all the Form 1 to Form 3 students residing at the school hostel were allowed to return home following the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination, which begins tomorrow.

Fatah said his team also brought two SPM students from Kampung Ladang Taku using a boat to cross the Kuala Nal River at 10.47am.

He said they were sent to SMK Sultan Yahya Petra 1 here to sit for the SPM 2024 Malay language speaking test, which is scheduled to start from tomorrow till Thursday.

Earlier, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said all SPM candidates affected by the floods would be placed in dormitories or mobilised to alternative examination centres, to ensure they sit for the examinations according to the set schedule.

A total of 5,377 SPM candidates were identified as affected by the floods — 3,111 in Kelantan, 1,734 in Terengganu and 532 in Kedah.
