PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has praised his Perikatan Nasional (PN) ally PAS for not throwing its weight around despite having the highest number of seats in the opposition coalition.

He said PAS had made way for other parties to take up top posts in PN, including that of the opposition leader and coalition chairman.

Muhyiddin is the PN chairman while newly elected Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin is the opposition leader.

“PAS is the biggest party,” Muhyiddin told FMT, referring to the 43 parliamentary seats the party obtained in the last general election.

“But they are not demanding.”

He also praised PAS for consulting the components whenever an issue arose, adding that such an approach had provided for a comfortable relationship with Bersatu.

One such issue was who should be PN’s poster boy in the next general election.

“As a matter of principle, it will be discussed at the PN Supreme Council meeting,” Muhyiddin said, adding that PN’s poster boy would be one who was accepted by the components and the public.

The former prime minister was responding to comments by PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin, who said the Islamic party was more qualified to lead the coalition given its number of parliamentary seats and strong grassroots machinery.

Bersatu Supreme Council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Gerakan president Dominic Lau subsequently backed Muhyiddin to remain as the opposition’s poster boy.

Muhyiddin said while he respected Hashim’s views, at the end of the day it boiled down to PAS’s stance on the matter.

“And we can discuss, there’s no problem.”

Asked why PAS had previously made way for him to lead PN, Muhyiddin said it could be due to his experience and seniority.
