PETALING JAYA:
A Taiwanese man serving a life sentence for murdering a Malaysian student in 2022 must pay her family more than NT$6 million (RM824,000) in compensation, a Taipei court ruled yesterday.

The Shilin district court said Chen Po-yen must pay the sum to the parents of the university student he strangled, with interest to be calculated annually at 5% from August 2023, reported Bernama.

The court’s ruling can be appealed.

The court found Chen, 32, guilty of murder in January, a verdict that was upheld by the Taiwan High Court in June.

It was previously reported that Chen and the student, identified by her surname Chai, met on Instagram in April 2022. Chen murdered Chai just a week after they started dating in October that year.

Chai, who was 24 when she died, was found suffocated to death in her rented apartment.

An autopsy revealed that she also suffered a broken neck, with prosecutors stating that Chen strangled Chai with his bare hands.

Chen confessed to suffocating Chai in her apartment after she refused to return money that he had previously transferred to her bank account.

She was studying at a Taipei university and working as a part-time model and live streamer on social media, according to police.

Her death was brought to light when Chen was rushed to a hospital due to what police believed at the time to be a suicide attempt.
