BUKIT MERTAJAM:
A lorry driver pleaded not guilty today to a charge of dangerous driving and causing the death of a 21-year-old woman after a container fell off his vehicle and crushed her car.

Marhizan Johari, 51, from Kangar, Perlis, was charged with dangerous driving, causing the death of Lee Zi Rou at Jalan Kebun Sireh here at 9.16am on Nov 13.

He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a sentence of five to 10 years, a maximum fine of RM50,000 and the suspension of his driving licence for five years.

Deputy public prosecutor Zulfadzly Hassan asked the court to deny Marhizan bail after he flashed a peace sign during his remand.

He said this showed the accused’s apparent lack of remorse, and that the picture of him flashing the sign had sparked public anger.

Magistrate Harith Mazlan denied Marhizan bail and set Jan 24 for the receipt of Puspakom’s reports on the crash, as well as medical and post-mortem reports.

Marhizan was not represented.
