PETALING JAYA:
Seven guidelines on personal data protection are to be released next year.

Four of them will be ready by early 2025 and the others by the third quarter, Bernama reported.

Personal data protection (PDP) commissioner Nazri Kama and Futurise San Bhd, in a joint statement today, said the guidelines to be released by early next year are the Data Protection Officer, Data Breach Notification, Cross-border Data Transfer and Data Portability, and the revised version of the Personal Data Protection Standard.

These guidelines will provide clear frameworks for the private sector to ensure compliance with evolving data protection regulations and international standards.

“They also address critical areas such as data handling, storage, access control and breach management. They will empower businesses and organisations to adopt best practices for safeguarding personal data,” they said.

The guidelines are aimed at strengthening data protection standards and are in line with recent amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709), which were approved by Parliament in July 2024 and gazetted on Oct 17, 2024.

Nazri, who is also director-general of the department of data protection, said the collaboration with Futurise had led to guidelines that were not only in compliance with international standards but also tailored to Malaysia’s unique regulatory environment.

“As Malaysia embraces digital transformation, ensuring the privacy and security of personal data becomes paramount.”

Futurise CEO Rosihan Zain Baharudin said data protection is not only about compliance but also ensuring trust in the digital economy.

He said the guidelines took into account input from various stakeholders and will empower organisations to uphold the highest standards in data security.
