Court grants Syed Saddiq temporary release of passport for Indonesia trip

The Muar MP wants to attend a forum in Jakarta from Nov 13 to 18.

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is appealing his conviction on abetting criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of assets, and money laundering charges.
PUTRAJAYA:
The Court of Appeal has allowed Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s bid for a temporary release of his passport to travel to Indonesia for a forum.

Justice Che Ruzima Ghazali granted the application today after deputy public prosecutor Afif Ali informed the court that the prosecution had no objection to the application.

The other judges who sat with him were Justices Azman Abdullah and Azmi Ariffin.

Syed Saddiq had sought the temporary release of his passport for him to attend a forum in Jakarta from tomorrow to Nov 18.

Previously, the appeals court allowed the temporary release of his passport for work trips to Thailand, Taiwan and Singapore.

In November last year, Syed Saddiq was sentenced to a total of seven years in prison and fined RM10 million after being convicted of abetting criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of assets, and money laundering.

Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid sentenced him to three years in prison and one stroke of the rotan on the CBT charge.

Syed Saddiq was also sentenced to another two years in prison and one stroke of the rotan for the embezzlement of assets belonging to the youth wing of Bersatu.

Both of these sentences are to run consecutively, meaning he will serve five years.

Azhar also imposed a prison term of two years each for the two counts of money laundering, and a fine of RM5 million each. He ordered these two sentences to run concurrently.

The judge, however, allowed an application by the defence to stay the sentences pending appeal.

Syed Saddiq was represented today by lawyer Kee Wei Lon and Ee Gen You.
