KUALA LUMPUR:
A young mother and her two friends were sentenced to 14 days in prison and fined RM10,000 each by the sessions court here today for child abuse.

Nur Adriana Mysara Nazri, 20, along with Adibah Zaini, 35, and Nor Azlin Fatin Najihah Lokman, 23, pleaded guilty after the charge under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act was read out before judge Norina Zainal Abidin.

The offence carries a fine of not more than RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.

If the trio are unable to pay the fine, each of them faces an additional six months in prison.

The offence took place at a home in Taman Danau Desa, Setapak, on Feb 23.

The court also imposed a five-year good behaviour bond on the trio and ordered them to carry out community service after completion of their sentences.

According to the facts of the case, police were alerted after a video went viral showing Adibah kicking Adriana’s son.

The boy, taken to Hospital Kuala Lumpur, was found to have suffered injuries on his abdomen, eyebrows, limbs and back.

Further investigations revealed that Adibah had kicked the boy while Azlin recorded the incident. Adriana had made no effort to stop them.

During the proceedings, the trio, who were unrepresented, pleaded for leniency. Adibah said she regretted her actions, promising not to repeat them, while Azlin cited financial obligations as her family’s sole provider.

Adriana said she left her son “in a cage” at Adibah’s home while away for work.

This prompted Norina to question Adriana’s decision to leave her son in such conditions rather than with his maternal grandmother in Penang. Adriana had no reply, only assuring the court she would not repeat her mistakes.

Deputy public prosecutor Joshua Tee asked the court to mete out a custodial sentence against them, noting the lack of remorse on Adriana’s part.
