PETALING JAYA:
The Barisan Nasional-Pakatan Harapan formula is no guarantee of a great victory for the unity government in Melaka as many of its policies today do not favour the public, says state Perikatan Nasional chief Dr Yadzil Yaakub.

He dismissed predictions by political analysts that BN-PH would take the state in the next state polls, as well as the notion that the Malay vote is returning to Umno.

Yadzil said the wins by candidates representing the BN-PH alliance in the last few by-elections do not reflect the public’s true sentiments about the government and will not translate into a state-wide polls victory.

“We cannot judge the results of the BN-PH alliance from the last three by-elections. Not one of them has any impact on the (respective) state governments.

“Except for Nenggiri, the last few by-elections were won by the incumbent parties,” he told FMT.

On Oct 16, analyst Lau Zhe Wei from the International Islamic University Malaysia said BN-PH’s cooperation and the trend of Malay votes returning to Umno stood in the way of PN’s goal of taking Melaka.

He was commenting on PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin’s confidence that the coalition would win big in the next state polls, replacing the BN state government after its term ends in late 2026.

Yadzil, who is also the Bemban assemblyman, said Malay support for PN remained, evidenced by the increase in the number of votes for the coalition in the last few by-elections.

He said PN still looked out and cared for the public despite the various limitations it faced, such as the lack of allocations to its MPs.

“We continue to care for the people’s welfare and help solve their problems. The increasing cost of living is the main burden they face.

“The public feels cheated by the government’s empty promises. The government’s unclear policies and flip-flopping on matters have caused the public to lose confidence in it.”

Yadzil claimed the government is constantly being criticised by all layers of society, clearly showing the people’s dissatisfaction with the current ruling system, including in Melaka.

In the November 2021 Melaka state polls, BN won 21 of the 28 seats. However, the coalition failed to win a single parliamentary seat in the state, in the 15th general election (GE15) held in November 2022.
