PETALING JAYA:
The Selangor government has not hidden any information on the Batang Kali landslide that took 31 lives two years ago, says menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin said the report on the disaster was prepared by the public works department and other authorities, not the state government, Sinar Harian reported.

“If the victims feel they have a case, they are free to take (legal) action, but the state government was guided by the report presented to them for action.

“The report said the incident was a natural disaster out of the state government’s control,” he was quoted as saying at a programme in Kajang today.

Amirudin said the state government asked its legal division to look into the matter in detail.

“The matter was looked into a month after the incident, and the report was presented to the victims’ relatives. Nothing was hidden. The report was made by the public works department and authorities based on facts,” he said.

It was previously reported that a group of 23, including family members of victims of the landslide, had filed a negligence suit against the Selangor government and six others over the incident.

In the statement of claim filed last week and sighted by FMT, the plaintiffs also named resort owner Malaysia Botanical Gardens Resort Sdn Bhd, campsite operator BL Agro Sdn Bhd, the Selangor public works department director, and Infrasel Sdn Bhd as defendants.

They are seeking special damages of RM1,220,406 on top of general and aggravated damages and costs from the defendants.

Asked if the state government has received a copy of the suit, Amirudin said it will need to be checked, which may take awhile as it is in the early stages, involving the court and discussions with lawyers.
