PETALING JAYA:
A surveyor has claimed trial to an attempted murder charge by trying to run down two policemen with his car in Penang last week.

Ammar Faris Zainulkifli, 31, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before judge Juraidah Abbas at the George Town sessions court today, Bernama reported.

He is accused of attempting to murder Mas Safiq Azizan Matzrol and Norhasmi Ab Razak by running them down with his Honda Civic while the duo were on patrol.

Ammar was charged with committing the offence behind Gurney Plaza on Jalan Kelawai, George Town, at 4.50pm on Oct 25.

The charge was framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 10 years in jail and a fine, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Lee Jun Keong asked the court to grant bail at RM12,000 but Ammar, who was not represented, pleaded for a lower amount, saying he only earned RM1,200 and needed to look after his aged and sickly mother.

The judge allowed Ammar bail of RM7,000 in one surety and scheduled Nov 20 for case mention.
