PUTRAJAYA:
Celebrity chef Redzuawan Ismail, known as Chef Wan, has withdrawn an application for leave to appeal against a decision requiring him to pay RM150,000 in defamation damages to his former son-in-law, Gavin O’Luanaigh.

The Federal Court struck out the application and ordered Chef Wan to pay RM5,000 in costs.

Chef Wan’s lawyer Nur Adilah Nabilah Abdull Jamal, later told reporters that Chef Wan has made the payment to O’Luanaigh, who had successfully obtained a Court of Appeal decision in June that Chef Wan’s social media posts against him were defamatory.

The court also issued an injunction preventing Chef Wan from making further defamatory statements against O’Luanaigh.

He filed the defamation suit in February 2021, claiming that eight of Chef Wan’s social media posts were defamatory toward him and his current wife. In his defence, Chef Wan argued that his statements were true and constituted fair comment.

The High Court held in May last year that the statements were not defamatory, but granted a partial injunction restraining Chef Wan from publishing any further defamatory remarks about O’Luanaigh and ordered him to delete the eight disputed posts.

O’Luanaigh, who embraced Islam and is known as Salahudin Ghaffar, married Chef Wan’s daughter, actress Serina, in 2010. The couple divorced in August 2017.
