RM1.1mil to repair schools damaged by hailstones in Terengganu

A severe thunderstorm damaged several buildings in Chukai, Kemaman, yesterday afternoon.

PETALING JAYA:
The Terengganu education department estimates that it will cost RM1.1 million to fix the seven schools in Chukai, Kemaman, that were damaged by hailstones during a thunderstorm yesterday.

The department’s director, Jelani Sulong, said repair work for six of the seven schools, estimated to cost RM300,000, will be carried out tomorrow.

The schools are SK Bukit Mentok, SK Seri Kemaman, SK Seri Iman, SMK Sultan Chukai, SMK Sultan Sulaiman and SMK Bukit Mentok.

He said work to repair the damage to the seventh school, SM (Agama) Al Falah, is estimated to cost RM800,000. The school will be given a holiday on Sunday for the repairs to be carried out.

The department has submitted a request for emergency funding from the education ministry to repair the schools.

The thunderstorm also damaged 244 houses in Chukai.

State infrastructure, utilities and rural development committee chairman Hanafiah Mat said the homes are located in nine villages, Bernama reported.

He said 17 teams of contractors have been deployed to repair the homes.
