Ti Lian Ker said several leaders and grassroot members believe the appointment to be “beneath” Wee and unbefitting of the stature of a party president.
He also described it as “superficial” and “undignified”.
The former deputy national unity minister said Wee should have been offered a more senior post, such as being named special envoy with ministerial ranking, given he is the MCA president and a former federal minister.
“That is a post which is more befitting of (Wee’s) stature,” he told FMT.
Ti also said Wee should reject the post as it detracts from the party’s priorities.
“MCA is not a business party, but a political one. We should be focussing on grooming our younger leaders and on preparations for the 16th general election instead,” he said.
He also described the post as “random” and “not legally provided for” and said some leaders have suggested that the appointment is “both unconstitutional and not institutional”.
On Sunday, Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced Wee’s appointment when officiating MCA’s general assembly.
However, several leaders viewed it to be merely a political appointment.
Ti also said he was personally concerned about a possible backlash if party leaders were to accept such posts, especially at a time when the party is trying to restore its standing among Chinese voters.
“It won’t do us good to be seen desperately snatching up appointments offered on an ad hoc basis, especially since MCA is now trying to rejuvenate itself and change the party’s image,” he said.
