The father of Islamic banking in Malaysia, Abdul Halim Ismail, died this morning. He was 85.

The news was confirmed through a post on Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd’s official Facebook page, which also stated that Halim was the first managing director of Bank Islam.

The bank called him a visionary leader who had built the foundation of Islamic finance in Malaysia.

It added that Halim’s dedication and pioneering spirit had played an important role in shaping Bank Islam’s journey and that it has left a lasting impact on the development of Malaysia’s Islamic finance industry.
