PETALING JAYA:
TP-Link Malaysia, a wireless local-area network provider, and Universiti Malaya (UM) are collaborating to introduce the country’s first AI-powered Wi-Fi 7 network.

The three-year collaboration will see TP-Link Malaysia equip the university’s computer science and information technology faculty’s “key areas”, including two lecture halls and a teaching lab, with Wi-Fi 7 technology, which ensures increased speeds and lower latency for devices.

The AI-driven Wi-Fi 7 network not only improves internet access but also allows for better security monitoring, network management, and data analytics through the use of AI technology.

The project aims to enhance both teaching and learning experience, the company said.

The setup will support over 750 users, making UM the first public university in Malaysia to benefit from such a high-performance network.

Hugo Cai, regional director of TP-Link Malaysia, said they were proud and excited to partner with UM to explore the utilisation of cutting-edge technologies like Wi-Fi 7 and integrated AI solutions.

“We look towards driving innovation and enhancing Malaysia’s digital experience, especially in the education sector,” he said.

UM’s chief information officer, Prof Nor Badrul Anuar Juma’at, said the institution hopes that TP-Link could assist them by providing more “proof-of-concept” (PoC) to show that their products are capable of giving better coverage for the students, via the collaboration.

“We have also been discussing with TP-Link on further collaboration to utilise some of their products as PoC in other areas of the UM campus, so this collaboration is not only limited to FCSIT,” he said, referring to the faculty.
