It is understood that Adri is the only remaining office bearer after the youth wing’s deputy chief and committee members resigned.
A source from the party told FMT that the resignation letters have been submitted to Umno’s headquarters, which will now decide whether to accept them or hold discussions to avoid a prolonged crisis.
“The committee members claim that their leader had failed to perform his duties effectively, especially in efforts for Umno to retake the (Bukit Gantang) parliamentary seat in the upcoming 16th general election (GE16).
“So, they decided to resign and their letters have been received by an Umno leader. However, the final decision will be up to the party’s leadership,” the source said.
According to the party’s constitution, a new election must be held for a division’s youth wing committee if two-thirds or more of its members resign. This election will need to take place during a special meeting, with the term of office set by the relevant division.
However, Bukit Gantang Umno chief Sollehin Tajie, when contacted, denied that the division’s youth wing was “crippled” following the reported mass resignations.
“It hasn’t been dissolved yet as discussions are still ongoing. The meeting will be held next week,” he said.
It is understood that Adri is currently in Mecca for umrah and will return to Malaysia next week.
FMT has also reached out to Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki for comment.
In addition to the situation in Bukit Gantang, the Parit Buntar Umno Youth wing is also undergoing a leadership change. Razman Ismail was appointed as the acting youth chief following the resignation of Faisal Abd Hamid in February.
