PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia is part of a coalition of 34 countries within the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (Unifil) that has condemned Israeli forces for their recent attacks on the peacekeepers.

In a joint statement, the countries called for an immediate stop to the attacks, which they said must be investigated.

“We urge the parties of the conflict to respect Unifil’s presence, which entails the obligation to guarantee the safety and security of its personnel at all times,” it added.

Unifil is tasked with monitoring a ceasefire in south Lebanon that ended a 33-day war in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah.

The statement, which was posted on X by the Polish UN mission last night, was also signed by leading Unifil contributors like Indonesia (1,231 troops), Italy (1,069 troops), Nepal (876 troops) and Ghana (873 troops).

Malaysia contributes 833 troops to Unifil, according to its website.

Unifil’s force consisted of a total of 10,058 peacekeepers from 50 countries as of Sept 2.

On Friday, the foreign ministry said the Malaysian Unifil battalion (Malbatt) stationed in Tibnin and Marakah was reported to be safe.

Wisma Putra also said the continuing indiscriminate attacks targeting UN personnel and innocent civilian populations are a grave violation of international law.

AFP today reported that at least five peacekeepers have been wounded in recent days as Israel takes its fight against Hezbollah into southern Lebanon.

Unifil said that its forces have repeatedly come under fire in the Lebanese town of Naqura where it is headquartered, as well as in other positions.

Its spokesman told AFP the peacekeeping mission’s work had become “very difficult because there is a lot of damage, even inside the bases”.
