The Masjid Tanah MP said it is time for Wanita Bersatu to be more assertive in championing the people’s problems, acting as a catalyst for the party leadership to ensure the government implements policies that benefit the populace.
“There are too many issues beyond economic or health concerns, and many more that are burdening the people under the current government,” she told FMT.
“It would be a shame if Wanita Bersatu failed to seize this opportunity to address these issues by debating and giving solutions that prioritise the welfare of the people.”
Mas Ermieyati said she envisions Wanita Bersatu not only as a champion among its members but also as an advocate for the broader community.
“In these eight years, not many people are aware of Bersatu,” she said.
“So I aim to cultivate more well-known figures with diverse portfolios and backgrounds who can serve as good examples and references for the public.”
While previous leaders have made strides to empower the party, Mas Ermieyati said, Wanita Bersatu has yet to fully voice the concerns of the people, particularly in providing constructive criticism on vital government issues.
She believes her wing must concentrate on core issues affecting women, families and children, alongside other matters such as the economy and international affairs.
“That’s why the wing needs to train and educate (members) to become a voice of the people, and to pressure the party leadership to bring forward issues, highlight them, and voice them to the government,” she said.
To achieve this, Mas Ermieyati said she will need an executive committee that is adaptable and open-minded, ensuring Wanita Bersatu remains relevant to the people, not just the party.
“We don’t want just a pretty face, we need representatives from all sectors. Professionals, artistes, entrepreneurs, educators and young women should join Wanita Bersatu to become influential advocates for the community,” she said.
