Yusoff Rawther claims trial to firearms charge

The former research assistant is accused of possessing two replica pistols.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Former research assistant Yusoff Rawther was charged in the magistrates’ court here today with possessing two replica pistols.

Yusoff pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate S Mageswary.

The charge was framed under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a penalty of up to one year in prison, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction.

According to the charge sheet, two replica pistols were found on him near Sanada Kiara Condominium on Jalan Bukit Kiara at 9.25am on Sept 6.

Yusoff was represented by lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali, while the prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Sabri Othman.

The court set Nov 12 for re-mention of the case.

Yusoff was charged in the same magistrates’ court on Sept 12 with trafficking in 305gm of cannabis. The charge was framed under the Dangerous Drugs Act.

He has filed an originating summons to seek an order to declare Section 41B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which prevents him from being granted bail, as unconstitutional.
