Chong Wei said Hendrawan, who guided him to the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, was both a mentor and brother figure to him.
He said Hendrawan had contributed immensely to Malaysian badminton, and that his impact would “last a lifetime”.
“Goodbyes are never easy, especially when they come from someone who has been by your side through thick and thin, both on and off the court.
“Your patience, wisdom, and passion for the game are unparalleled. Yes, of course, you have contributed to my success.
“Even though you’re going on to other challenges, your influence on my career and Malaysian badminton will last a lifetime. Thank you for everything, coach,” he said in a Facebook post.
Hendrawan, the 2001 world champion, was appointed by the Badminton Association of Malaysia as the national men’s singles coach in 2009.
BAM had said his replacement would be unveiled at a later date.
