PETALING JAYA:
Police have opened an investigation paper concerning a pro-Palestine protest held near the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur earlier today.

Wangsa Maju police chief Lazim Ismail said seven protesters gathered at the back entrance of the US embassy to show solidarity with Palestine in the ongoing war with Israel.

In a statement, he said an investigation paper was opened under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for organising an assembly without notifying the police.

Section 9(5) states that any person who does not give the police 10 days notice before organising an assembly is committing an offence. Any offender can be fined not more than RM10,000 if convicted.

“Police advise the public not to participate in rallies that are not in accordance with the law,” said Lazim.

In February, police detained Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) activist Harmit Singh for allegedly coming too close to the US embassy’s entrance during a rally by pro-Palestine group Gegar Amerika.

Last December, police opened an investigation paper concerning the pro-Palestine protest “Aksi Bertindak: Kepung Demi Palestin (Siege for Palestine)”, which was held near the US embassy.
