PETALING JAYA:
The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) has launched an investigation after eight unlabelled drums of chemical waste were found thrown into a drainage channel at an industrial park in Sungai Buloh.

Selangor executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin, who oversees the public health and environment portfolio, said the chemical containers were discovered at Jalan Desa Aman at 2pm yesterday.

She said Luas had collected samples for analysis and opened an investigation paper under Section 79(4) of the 1999 Luas Enactment.

“Based on checks by Luas and the Selayang Municipal Council, there was a strong chemical-like odour at the location,” she said in a statement.

Jamaliah also said cleaning works at the site had been carried out by the council.

She added that Luas had immediately communicated the matter to the environment department, Air Selangor, the National Water Services Commission, the police, as well as the fire and rescue department.

Jamaliah said water from the drainage channel flows into Sungai Gasi and subsequently into Sungai Buloh, with no treatment plants downstream.

She reminded all parties that water sources, especially rivers, should not be used as waste disposal sites.
