PENDANG:
Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor today thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for announcing a RM13 million allocation to help the state recover from the ongoing floods.

He said the state government greatly appreciated the funds, which would be used to repair damaged infrastructure, provide assistance to affected paddy farmers and restore homes damaged by the floods.

“I hope the federal government will consider giving more allocations.

“I’m truly thankful for the RM13 million announced yesterday, but I hope for more support,” he told reporters during a visit to the temporary relief centre at SMK Tanah Merah here today.

Sanusi also said the state government had previously announced an initial assistance of RM1,000 for each household evacuated to temporary relief centres. More than 2,000 families have been affected so far.

He said although the floods had affected multiple districts, it was not as severe as the one experienced in 2010.

Sanusi hoped the upcoming monsoon transition phase, forecast to begin on Sept 24, would not trigger a second wave of floods in Kedah.

As of 8am today, the number of flood victims in Kedah had risen to 8,898 from 8,066 at 8pm yesterday.

All the victims, from 2,871 families, have been relocated to 44 temporary relief centres in five districts.
