The police report was lodged by PN Youth election machinery coordinator Shazni Sulaiman and Bersatu member Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard.
Shazni said the two-day carnival, organised by the state government, and attended by Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi, offered prizes worth thousands of ringgit, including motorcycles. He alleged the prizes were inducements for voters in Mahkota.
“We also saw the BN candidate (Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah) together with the menteri besar during the ‘Jelajah Orang Mahkota’ event,” he told reporters outside the Kluang police station.
Shazni said that the prizes won by the constituents was a form of corruption under the Election Offences Act 1954, and urged the police as well as the Election Commission to act on the matter.
“BN claims this carnival is not part of its campaign but it is clearly a lie because their candidate accompanied Onn Hafiz at almost all the events,” Shazni said.
The by-election, to be held on Sept 28, is a contest between Syed Hussien of Umno and Haizan Jaafar of Bersatu. The by-election was called following the death of assemblyman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.
