Bernama reported that an official from Hamzah’s office submitted the nomination form on behalf of the Larut MP at the Bersatu headquarters here this morning.
The Bersatu deputy president’s post is currently held by Ahmad Faizal Azumu.
Under a plan which Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin mooted in July, he will stay on as the Bersatu president while Faizal will step down and make way for Hamzah – who has been Bersatu secretary-general since 2020 – to assume his post.
At a press conference on July 13, following Bersatu’s convention at the Ideal Convention Centre in Selayang, Selangor, Muhyiddin said Faizal agreed to give way to Hamzah in recognition of his contributions as Perikatan Nasional secretary-general and the opposition leader in Parliament.
Muhyiddin also proposed that former Selangor menteri besar Azmin Ali be offered the secretary-general’s post given his ability and political experience.
