KUALA LUMPUR:
A man suspected of being the mastermind behind the “counter setting” syndicate bringing in foreigners through KLIA has been handed over to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in Selangor for further investigations.

An MACC source said the man, in his 40s, was arrested in Negeri Sembilan on Wednesday.

“The suspect was believed to have conspired with syndicate agents to bring in foreign nationals arriving through KLIA,” the source said today.

Selangor MACC director Alias Salim, when contacted, said the suspect will be taken to the magistrates’ court tomorrow for a remand application to be made.

On Wednesday, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said a senior immigration officer is expected to be charged early next month over a human trafficking syndicate that operated at KLIA.

He said the senior officer is believed to be the mastermind behind the syndicate, which facilitated the entry of foreigners through the country’s entry points without undergoing proper immigration checks.

So far MACC has arrested 49 immigration officers and one from the police as part of its investigations.
