PETALING JAYA:
The national unity ministry has expressed support for the creation of a national historians’ council to tackle issues concerning historical distortions that could affect the nation’s stability and peace.

Its minister Aaron Ago Dagang said the council will comprise historians, academics, and relevant NGOs, with the National Archives overseeing its administration.

“Several countries around the world have their own councils, such as the Philippines (The National Historical Commission of the Philippines), the US (National Council on Public History), France (Commission Nationale de l’Histoire) and other nations,” he said in a statement today.

He said the council will focus on historical research, verifying sources, writing, publishing as well as historical education and advocacy.

“History is important because it gives us insight into a society’s culture and identity. It allows us to learn from past mistakes and accomplishments, guiding the decisions of today and the future.

“Additionally, history also teaches values like tolerance and unity, helping us appreciate multiple perspectives. Through an understanding of history, we can build a more knowledgeable and resilient society,” he said.

Aaron also hopes that the council will play a significant role in shaping the nation’s future.

“With the establishment of this council, Malaysia will be better equipped to safeguard its historical facts from manipulation by irresponsible parties,” he said.

Previously, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi suggested that historians gather under one body over concerns of historical distortion.

He said the council should become the authoritative body in overseeing the writing of the nation’s historical narratives, ensuring they are based on facts and free from political interference or bias.
