PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered the Football Association of Malaysia to draw up a plan and create a key performance index to help improve the national squad’s performance.

In a Facebook post, youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh said Anwar’s directive follows the RM15 million allocation for the development of the Harimau Malaya football team and the welfare of its players earlier this month.

Yeoh said Anwar had ordered FAM to come up with a plan and devise a KPI when he met FAM’s leadership this morning.

“He also said the finance ministry as well as the youth and sports ministry will be monitoring the utilisation of the funds periodically,” she said.

Yeoh said her ministry will be roping in the Asian Football Confederation to review the National Football Development Programme for further improvements.

“The prime minister reiterated the government’s commitment to boost the country’s sporting ecosystem and said the funds set aside for Harimau Malaya would not see any reduction in allocations for other sports,” she said.

In announcing the RM15 million allocation on Sept 3, Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said RM10 million would be from the ministry, while the remaining RM5 million would be contributed by private companies.

Anwar said the sum was “specifically for the Harimau Malaya team”, namely, the manager, the coaches, and the welfare of the players, and not for the association.
