Berita Harian reported him as demanding the government prepare new drafts and set up a special committee to discuss the MoUs.
“Everything contained in these draft MoUs is unacceptable.
“A committee to look into what is needed in the MoUs should be set up before both parties discuss the documents,” he said at a press conference at the Kota Bharu PAS office today.
Takiyuddin also said the opposition felt there was no need to send deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof an official letter informing him of their rejection of the proposed MoUs.
“They sent us the MoU drafts without considering our views. So we don’t need to send them an official letter. It is enough for us to inform the Malaysian public of our rejection,” he said.
On Sunday, Fadillah released to the public the two draft MoUs, saying it was for Malaysians to judge the claims made by opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin.
Hamzah had claimed the proposed drafts went against the Federal Constitution, with conditions that touched on the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras.
He also claimed the proposed MoUs conflicted with cultural and religious values, lacked clear mechanisms and potentially restricted MPs’ freedom of speech.
The first draft MoU, which was meant to be signed by the government and individual MPs, outlines the role of opposition MPs in providing checks and balances, offering credible policy alternatives and promoting national unity.
In exchange for equal privileges in the lower house, parliamentary resources and constituency funds, MPs are required to declare their assets within 14 days of signing the MoU and adhere to a proposed seven principles of public life, among others.
The second draft MoU includes similar elements but would be signed by the unity government and PN as a bloc, binding all its MPs to the agreement.
