Water level at 3 Kedah rivers exceeds danger mark

Several more rivers are now at the warning level following heavy rain.

The water level at three rivers in Kedah has exceeded the danger mark with an upward trend as of 10pm today, says the Public Infobanjir website of the irrigation and drainage department.

The Laka River at Kampung Padang Pasir, Kubang Pasu recorded a reading of 22.15m, above the danger level of 21.6m, Sungai Sari at the Padang Terap sugar factory recorded a reading of 28.68m, above the danger level of 28.5m, while Sungai Gurun at Kampung Perupok, Yan recorded a reading of 3.95m, above the danger level of 3.5m.

Several more rivers are at the warning level and are on alert with an upward trend,m including Sungai Janing and Sungai Perik in Padang Terap, Sungai Ketil in Baling and Sungai Bata in Kubang Pasu.

Kubang Pasu district civil defence officer Adenin Suhaimi said heavy rain since this morning caused several areas in the district to experience flash floods and the list of areas involved and the number of houses affected were still being compiled.

He said members of the Kubang Pasu civil defence force are monitoring the Asun-Jitra Road which had been flooded since 3.55pm, causing traffic flow to be disrupted but no temporary evacuation centre had been opened so far.

Sik district civil defence officer Haisul Aishah Napiah said intermittent rain since morning had caused many cases of fallen trees due to wet and weak soil structure.

Her said his team was also monitoring the water level of the main river in Sik, especially the Chepir River, which is at the alert level.
