PETALING JAYA:
A former deputy minister has filed a RM50 million defamation suit at the Shah Alam High Court against the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) and two of its office bearers for linking her and her husband to a human trafficking syndicate in Myanmar.

Mashitah Ibrahim wants the court to order the defendants – MHO, Hishamuddin Hashim, identified as the society’s chairman or secretary-general, and committee member Azizul Syafiq Sazali – to permanently remove three libellous postings published on TikTok and Facebook on Aug 28 and Sept 3.

The former Baling MP also seeks a restraining order to prevent republication of the postings by the defendants or their agents.

In addition, Mashitah, who served as deputy minister in the prime minister’s department between 2008 and 2013, wants the defendants to publish their apology in selected newspapers and on social media platforms.

She is also seeking compensatory, aggravated and exemplary damages to the tune of RM50 million, costs and other relief as deemed fit by the court.

Mashitah, who filed the writ and statement of claim through solicitors Akberdin & Co earlier this week, said the impugned statements claimed that she was linked to the Dong Mei Group of companies in Myanmar, which is allegedly involved in human trafficking activities.

She said the statements were untrue and libellous and had invited negative comments from members of the public, which had lowered her reputation and exposed her to public hostility on social media.

Meanwhile, lawyer Akberdin Abdul Kader said Mashita had applied for the court to issue a mandatory injunction for the removal of the impugned postings on Facebook and TikTok.

He said the application is scheduled to come up for hearing before Judicial Commissioner Jamhirah Ali on an ex-parte basis next Tuesday.
