Sisters In Islam (SIS) also said such remarks trivialised a woman’s ability to think for herself.
“Marriage should not be politicised.
“Such proposals only highlight the fact that PAS is patriarchal,” the group’s executive director Rozana Isa told FMT.
She was responding to remarks by Selangor PAS Youth secretary Aubidullah Fahim Ibrahim that such a mixed marriage “would not just be able to secure one vote, but hundreds from the non-Malay community”.
PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden has since said the proposal was Aubidullah’s personal opinion and should not be taken seriously.
However, based on Aubidullah’s logic, Rozana said she wondered if the wives of PAS members could not think for themselves or were free to vote for their preferred candidate.
“It’s really an old-fashioned view that speaks volumes of a woman’s freedom in the PAS community.”
Rozana’s reprimand marks the second time SIS has taken PAS leaders to task over the issue of marriage in less than a week.
On Sept 9, the group chastised Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor for joking about having “two more quotas to fill” after the PAS election director took a second wife.
“Joking about polygamy belittles the real struggles women face in such situations and minimises the deep emotional toll it can take on families,” SIS had said.
