KUALA LUMPUR:
The statistics department has launched the MyAgeing Dashboard, an interactive data visualisation tool that provides information related to population statistics, ageing and life expectancy.

This is available at the national, state and administrative district levels, from 1970 until present.

Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said data is presented by gender, major ethnic groups and vital statistics, such as fertility rates and average age at marriage.

“This dashboard incorporates time series data and indicators from 1970 onwards, as published by the department,” he said at the dashboard’s virtual launch today.

“These statistics can serve as crucial input for formulating, implementing and monitoring national policies, particularly those related to population ageing.

“I hope this presentation will provide us with a broader and deeper perspective on ageing issues in Malaysia, as well as the nation’s and the world’s preparedness to face the challenges of an ageing population.”

The MyAgeing Dashboard integrates various primary data sources published by the department, including current population estimates, census data, vital statistics and life expectancy reports.

It also includes administrative data from various ministries, departments and government agencies, including healthcare and social services data for senior citizens.

Uzir said the dashboard also features articles and the latest news on ageing issues, from both domestic and international sources.

While presenting the trends and analysis of population ageing in Malaysia, he said 11.6% of the population are currently aged 60 and above.

“In 1970, only 5.4% of the population were aged 60 and above, while 44. 5% were aged 14 and below.

“However, in 2024, the population aged 14 and below decreased to 22.2% while those aged 60 and above increased to 11.6%,” he said.

“This composition is projected to reach 17.3% by 2040.

“In 2039, the number of people aged 60 and above is expected to be 6.17 million, surpassing the 6.11 million people aged 14 and below.”

He also said the three states with the highest percentage of residents aged 60 and above in 2024 are Perak (14.9%), Sarawak (13.4%) and Kedah (13.3%), compared to 1970 when the figures were 5.8%, 4.9% and 5.5% respectively.

Uzir said the factors contributing to the ageing population were declining birth rates, a reduced total fertility rate and increased life expectancy.
