Member of African robbery gang shot dead

Police say wanted man opened fire on them during a raid on an apartment in Puchong, Selangor.

A foreigner, believed to be a member of an African robbery gang wanted by the police, was killed during a shootout at an apartment in Puchong Jaya, Selangor, last night.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the shootout occurred at 10.50pm when police raided a ninth-floor unit at Menara KLH to arrest the suspect.

“The suspect was alone and refused to cooperate. He fired two shots at the police with a revolver, forcing the police to return fire,” he told reporters at the scene.

Shuhaily said police found two machetes, a fake licence plate and a bag containing counterfeit money in the apartment.

The suspect also possessed a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card, believed to be counterfeit.

He said the man, whose nationality and age were being determined, was part of an African robbery gang.

Another member of the gang had been shot dead by the police on Jalan PJS 9/1, Subang Jaya, on Aug 20, and three others arrested while attempting to rob a Japanese national at a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur.on Aug 25.

Police are tracking down the remaining members of the gang.
