PETALING JAYA:
Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has denied any wrongdoing in the awarding of the 1BestariNet project tender during his tenure as education minister.

“Wallahi (I swear to Allah), I didn’t take a single sen,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

Muhyiddin was responding to questions about the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) investigation into the now-defunct RM4 billion project, awarded to YTL Communications in 2011.

On Wednesday, it was reported that MACC had raided YTL Communication’s Kuala Lumpur office and a government office as part of an investigation into the payment claims related to the 1BestariNet service tender.

A MACC source said the investigation is centred on claims involving false details related to RM2.7 billion in payments, as well as “other criminal elements” under the MACC Act 2009.

The 1BestariNet project, intended to enhance connectivity and provide a learning platform for teachers, students and parents, has faced criticism for its poor internet service.

Muhyiddin said MACC has every right to investigate the matter but insisted that the tender process was conducted transparently.

“An international open tender was proposed. The final decision was made by the finance minister at the time, Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“Do not jump to conclusions (just) because I was the minister at that time. I did not see the contract or its provisions. Everything was handled by the government and the finance ministry.”

The former prime minister also said he was puzzled why this issue had resurfaced as he had faced investigations before on the matter due to complaints.
