SEPANG:
Malaysia Airlines will not follow Cathay Pacific Airways in grounding its Airbus A350 fleet, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

He said he had spoken to Malaysia Airlines and was informed that the two airlines do not use the same engine model for their respective A350 fleets, so flights will continue as usual.

“They mentioned that they have checked the engines, and the ones used here are different from those in Cathay Pacific, even though we both operate the A350.

“They are in touch with Airbus, so if any action is needed, they will certainly heed it,” he said.

Yesterday, Reuters reported that the Hong Kong-based airline had started inspecting all its Airbus A350 jets after the in-flight failure of an engine component.

According to Rolls-Royce, the sole engine supplier for the A350, Cathay Pacific flight CX383 from Hong Kong to Zurich was fitted with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 turbofans.

There are two other Trent models available for the A350 — XWB-75 and XWB-84.

Cathay Pacific said it had cancelled 24 return flights until the end of Tuesday, and that a number of aircraft would be out of service for several days while the process, which it described as precautionary, was completed.

According to Flightradar24 data, the problem apparently unfolded several minutes after take-off as flight CX383 headed out over the sea, south of Hong Kong, yesterday.

Instead of immediately turning north for the roughly 12-hour journey to Zurich, the aircraft performed two wide circles before returning to Hong Kong where it landed safely about 75 minutes after take-off.
