The veterinary department said the Selangor animal welfare officer has been ordered to conduct an immediate inspection to review the park’s management and animal care conditions.
However, Klang mayor Noraini Roslan rejected accusations that the cats were being neglected.
Images and a video clip purporting to depict the poor condition of the cats at the park have been widely shared on social media.
Noraini said: “Some of the information shared is completely untrue, especially claims that the cats are hungry and neglected.
“In fact, reports of a large number of cat deaths are also false. Only one cat was found dead (placed outside the park by an unidentified individual) after my own inspection with Sime Darby this morning.”
The cat park was built by Sime Darby Property and is now operated and maintained by the Klang city council’s health department.
Noraini said the city council will implement several improvements to the park immediately to enhance the comfort of the cats.
She added that the council plans to install netting to prevent excessive heat at the cat park.
