Held in wet conditions, Hakim Danish effectively utilised his expertise in racing on the slippery surface in Aragon to finish six seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Berita Harian reported.
Starting from the grid in fifth position, the Terengganu-born rider quickly took the hole-shot into the first corner and never saw another rider in front of him for the rest of the race.
He did have Spanish rider Brian Uriarte for company for the majority of the race but the championship pacesetter could not match the Malaysian and eased off towards the end of the race.
As a result, Uriarte had to settle for finishing in second, while Finnish rider Rico Salmela completed the podium.
“I managed the race well today, and I felt very confident with my machine,” 17-year-old Hakim Danish said.
“I want to thank the Red Bull Rookies crew, ZK Racing, SIC, Rider Formation and everyone who supported me.
“Yesterday was National Day and this victory is for all Malaysians,” he said.
His victory in Aragon was his first in the Red Bull Rookies campaign, which he joined last season.
It also made him the first Malaysian rider to win in the championship, which feeds MotoGP, motorcycle racing’s elite class.
The victory also helped him overcome the disappointment from Race 1 yesterday, where he finished 14th after being penalised for multiple errors.
