PETALING JAYA:
Gabungan Rakyat Sabah chairman Hajiji Noor is confident the ruling alliance of GRS and Pakatan Harapan Plus will continue to govern after the next state election, expected to be held next year.

Hajiji, who is the chief minister, said his confidence is based on the current political developments in the state and Sabahans’ increasing acceptance of the state government.

“I know the strength of our party,” he said and looked forward to continuing working with PH Plus in the new government to be formed after the next state election.

The Sabah state assembly’s term ends in October next year, after which a state election must be held within 60 days, should it not be dissolved earlier.

Hajiji said many factors need to be considered in preparation for the elections, including the interests of GRS partners and of the federal unity government coalition.

GRS is part of the federal coalition, which comprises PH, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, as well as several minor parties and independents. However, in Sabah, BN is part of the opposition while Hajiji’s government has the support of four Umno members.

Hajiji, speaking at a GRS divisional meeting in Usukan, also reiterated the importance of maintaining a good relationship with the federal government.

He said the state government has addressed several issues related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, adding that Sabah has “never backed down” in asking the federal government to fulfil MA63.

“If the state does not cooperate with the federal government, what happens?

“We need to be wise in politics; we cannot be adversarial with the federal government.”
