Cabinet to discuss compensation for sinkhole victim’s family

Federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa says the matter will be brought up next week.

PETALING JAYA:
The Cabinet will discuss a proposal to compensate the family of the tourist from India who fell into a sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur.

Federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said she intends to bring up the matter for discussion next week, Bernama reported.

The missing woman, Vijayaletchumy, 48, from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, was on holiday with her family in Malaysia. She was swallowed up in an eight-metre-deep sinkhole which opened up on Aug 23 while she was walking in the area.

Officials called off the search and rescue operation for the woman yesterday, after nine days of effort.

The Masjid India area was bustling with visitors again today, with some shops reopening after closing since the sinkhole incident occurred.

Clothing stall worker Nora Amrizal, 36, hopes that the authorities will continue conducting checks on the street for the safety of traders and visitors.

She said traders would suffer losses if the public felt the location was unsafe to visit following the sinkhole incident.
