PETALING JAYA:
A male suspect linked to the misappropriation of 1.6 million litres of diesel in Sibu has been freed on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission bail here today after his four-day remand period ended today, while his sister was freed on MACC bail on Tuesday.

The man, 40, and his sister, 39, had been remanded since Monday for investigations into a subsidised diesel misappropriation and bribery case, and were arrested during a raid on a diesel storage depot in Sungai Bidut, Sibu, on Aug 25, Bernama reported.

In addition to the 1.6 million litres of diesel seized, the MACC also confiscated RM3.7 million in cash and two barges during the raid, while an enforcement agency director and enforcement assistant were subsequently arrested and released on MACC bail.

MACC chief Azam Baki had said the group smuggled subsidised diesel overseas and paid off enforcement officers to keep their operation going.

Azam also said the syndicate had been operating since 2012 and was believed to have pocketed RM400 million since then.
